The thermal arm of Hindustan Power is focused on generating power through coal- fired power stations in India.
Hindustan Thermalprojects Limited, the thermal arm of Hindustan Power forayed into thermal sector in 2008 to play an active role in strengthening the power infrastructure as well as economic growth of the country. The thermal arm through its Special Purpose Vehicle (“SPV”) MB Power (Madhya Pradesh) Limited has developed Phase-I of 1200 MW coal based generating capacity in April 2016 at District Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh.
The SPV is currently supplying 85% of the power generated to the distribution utilities of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh & Haryana under long term as well as medium term PPA; the balance power is being sold through bilateral arrangements and power exchanges.
As per CEA-Feb 2019 Power Supply Position Report, the installed capacity of the country is 350.16 GW; out of which coal-based capacities shares almost 55% contribution & meets 82% of the total energy demand of the country.
The ICF Study 2018 suggests that the electricity demand of the country is expected to grow at CAGR of 6.5% for next 10 years due to various Govt. initiatives like Saubhagya Scheme, 24x7 power supply obligations under UDAY scheme and focus on rural electrification under DDUGJY scheme. The country will continue to require coal-based generation capacities to service its growing electricity demand & provide base load despite increased presence of RES capacities
In view of country’s dependence on coal-based capacities on account of base load requirement & maintaining the grid balance with respect to upcoming RES capacities, the thermal arm of Hindustan Power is developing the Phase-II of 1320 MW of coal-based power project at District Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh for which the pre-development activities like land acquisition, water linkage available etc. have been completed.
Another project of 1320 MW coal based thermal power project is in advance stage of development at District Janjgir in the state of Chhattisgarh.
The Company is also exploring various upcoming opportunities for acquiring thermal stressed assets in Indian market to expand the power portfolio.
